Pixelate image
Upload a photo and FileTinker turns it into mosaic blocks — bigger blocks mean stronger pixelation. Use it for a retro 8-bit effect or to obscure faces, plates and other details. It all runs in your browser.
How to pixelate an image
- Upload your image.
- Drag the block-size slider to set the strength.
- Download your pixelated image.
About pixelating images
Pixelation averages each square block of pixels into a single colour, replacing fine detail with a coarse mosaic. It is the classic way to create a retro, low-resolution 8-bit aesthetic, and the simplest way to censor private information in a screenshot or photo.
Because the detail inside each block is discarded, a large enough block size makes the original content unrecoverable — handy for hiding faces, names, addresses or licence plates before sharing. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pixelate an image?
Upload your image and drag the block-size slider — larger blocks give a stronger, chunkier mosaic. The preview updates live; download when it looks right.
Can I use this to censor or hide something?
Yes. A large block size makes faces, licence plates or text unreadable. For sensitive redaction, use a big block size so the original detail cannot be recovered.
Does it lower the resolution?
No. The output keeps the original pixel dimensions; only the appearance is blocky. PNG and WebP keep their format; other formats save as JPEG.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Pixelation happens entirely in your browser, so your photo never leaves your device.
