About compressing video
Video file size is largely set by its bitrate — the data used per second. Lowering the bitrate shrinks the file, trading away some visual detail. You can pick a quality level for a quick result, or give a target file size and FileTinker works out the bitrate to hit it — re-encoding once or twice to land at or under your target.
The tool re-records your video with the browser’s built-in recorder — there is no ffmpeg. Processing happens in real time — about as long as the clip itself — and the output is MP4 or WebM depending on your browser. Results vary by browser and source, and a clip that is already heavily compressed may not shrink much, or may not reach a very small target. Nothing is uploaded.

How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on the source and your settings — the tool shows the before/after sizes. With a target size, FileTinker re-encodes to land at or under it; with a quality level, a high-bitrate original can shrink a lot while an already-compressed clip may shrink only a little.
Will it reduce the quality?
Yes — compression lowers the bitrate, which trades some visual detail for a smaller file. Pick a higher quality level if you want to keep more detail.
How long does it take?
